Hakuro Nishiki willow – why the leaves are turning brown?
Hello! It’s a grafted hakuro Nishiki willow, which I planted last august. So far all good, willow has grown, and it had new shoots, generally doing well. Today I noticed that the white leaves have started to turn brown and I don’t understand why. I also saw that some leaves, especially the small, little ones, are a little wrinkled. If you can tell me please what is happening, whether or not I have any cause for concern. Thank you.

Hello, in order to be able to help you with a proper recommendation, please specify more details: what are the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity)? How is watering performed, at what interval? When watering the lawn, is it possible for water to reach the branches? Were there temperature fluctuations in that area? Have you noticed the presence of pests, more precisely, small insects on the underside of the leaves or a sticky substance on them?

The temperature is a little over 20 degrees, only a few days a slightly hotter sun. Quite frequent rains and as a result, the need for watering is quite low, but I usually water the garden every time I see that the soil is drier (somewhat clayey soil, it is difficult to drain). The water does not reach the branches, maybe there were some temperature fluctuations but quite short in duration. Otherwise, the leaves are clean, I looked carefully to see if there were any pests or any other signs. However, interestingly, I see that the browning process occurred only on the white / cream leaves, the green ones being intact. Thank you.

From the information provided, the conditions of care seem to be appropriate for willow, and probably the direct sunlight is responsible for the symptoms present. Usually, variegated specimens are more susceptible to sunburn due to the absence of chlorophyll in the leaves (which explains this situation, in which only the white leaves are affected). In this case, if you want, you can try the administration of fertilizer with beneficial microorganisms, which supports the resistance of the plant to stress factors: AMN BonaVita, 500 ml. The treatments can be administered by watering, in a dose of 30 ml / 10 liters of water.
