Fittonia, discolored leaves
I have a fittonia that is a few months old in a flowerpot with a self-watering system using some string at its base. It’s growing new leaves, but some of them are discolored and I noticed some black flies on the foliage. It stays in direct sunlight, but I don’t think they are burns.

Hello! In the attached photos the attack of some pests can be seen, but due to their small size it is not possible to make an exact identification. In this case, please check carefully both the topside and the underside of the leaves for the presence of pests and attach some clear, close-up pictures.
OzOzana15 October 2023I have attached the pictures, I hope they are clearer. Thanks.

Hello! The symptoms present on the leaves of Fittonia are similar to a thrips attack. In this case it is recommended to remove the affected parts of the plant, followed by 1-2 treatments with an insecticide such as Vertimec 1.8 EC, 10 ml or Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, in a dose of 5 ml/10 L water, applied by foliar spraying. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticide, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 L to the solution. Spray the mixture as finely as possible (Foxy Plus), so that it is distributed evenly on the plant, both on the leaves and on the stem. It is important to prepare a volume of solution corresponding to a single treatment (respecting the mentioned dosages), because the already prepared mixture has a shelf life of 24 hours.
7-10 days after the treatments, it is advisable to use a maintenance product such as Contra X, 500 ml, applied directly by spraying. It supports plant regeneration after certain stressful conditions, or if they have suffered from pest attacks.
To capture potential pests, we recommend using an adhesive trap such as Impact Blue, 10 x 25 cm. Insect pests are attracted by the color of the paper and stick to the special adhesive.
