Does Legionella pneumophila affect plants?
Hello! I planted my seeds in a nursery and watered them with warm water from the boiler. Coincidentally, I had also treated the trees with calcium polysulfide and I did not notice that the hot water smelled of sulfur. When I tried to look for information about the water smell, I discovered that some bacteria (e.g. Legionella Pneumophilus) can form and grow wonderfully in a damp environment with temperatures between 20 …approx. 50 degrees. As I have solar panels, the water stays in the boiler at max. 30 degrees. Anyway, that’s the introduction, so you can ask the question: do you think the bacteria in the water transfer to the seeds/seedlings/vegetables? Can they become dangerous for consumption?
I should mention that I also mixed the water with a bio-fungicide.
This puts me in a dilemma: what do I do with the trees? Polysulphide I have diluted in the same potential source of bacteria.
Are there no treatments?
Can the presence of the bacteria be checked in the seedlings, in the fruit? Microscopically?
I don’t treat the trees anymore?
Now, I can buy other seedlings, but what about the trees? Is there a risk that I’ve infested them irreparably?
Thank you in advance! Even if you don’t have an answer. -
Hello, indeed, Legionella pneumophila bacteria is a microorganism that can grow on the inner surface of water storage tanks, under optimal conditions of temperature, pH, ventilation. It does not affect plants, as it has no penetration mechanisms in plant organisms. As a gram-negative bacterium, Legionella pneumophila is pathogenic to humans, and infection with this bacterium can cause pneumonia.
Given the many species of microorganisms that can grow inside water containers, it is possible that sulfur odor is caused by other bacteria. Determining the presence of Legionella pneumophila in water can be done by ELISA tests or by microagglutination reaction, so it is recommended to consult a specialized laboratory for water samples analysis.-

Thank you! So, should I feel (more) calm about the influence on trees and seedlings? As a solution, I emptied the boiler then refilled it, and heated the water to approx. 65 degrees. It cleared up and the sulfur smell disappeared. In the future, I intend to chlorinate it. I have a charging pump for the solar panel heating system and I will use it for this purpose.

Hello, Legionella pneumophila does not affect plants, but it is contagious to humans, so it is advisable to seek the help of a specialized laboratory for water analysis.
