Birch, pruning to stop it from growing in height
Hello,
I have two birch trees that have grown well, but they have grown tall and have thin stems.
Would it be advisable to cut their upper part in spring so that they are more bushy and stop growing?
Is there a risk of them drying out?
ThanksAttachments:

Hello. Given the growth form of the birches in the photos, it is possible that the aesthetic appearance and vigor will be irreversibly affected if the tip is removed. As a rule, the slender growth of the trees is due to the lack of light, namely to the competition that occurs when there are several trees at small distances between them (Growth and development of trees and forest stands). However, in this case, the narrow crown shape, tall height and slender stem are most likely genetic characteristics of the specimens. Thus, to ensure additional stability until the stems thicken naturally, you may consider propping or anchoring the trees (so that they do not bend/break in case of strong winds or snow).
Additionally, during the period we are in, you can consider using a fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg, by spreading it around the plants, in a dose of 20 – 30 g/sqm, followed by incorporation and watering. It has the effect of increasing the resistance to frost and improving the water balance of trees and shrubs and can be applied to a wide range of plants, including lawns.
Starting in spring, it is recommended to ensure the optimal growing conditions as described in our article: Birch, planting guide and care work. It is advisable to remove gravel and plant debris from the base of the trees and to gently loosen the topsoil. It is important to keep a permanently loosened and clear area around the plants, at least in the region where the roots spread. During the growing season, to stimulate a vigorous growth, you may consider to regularly apply a fertilizer that is specially formulated for the nutritional requirements of ornamental trees, such as AMN Trees, 500 ml, according to the recommendations on the label.-
