Bamboo, half-dried leaves
Hi, I’ve had a Fish-Pole Bamboo in a pot for 2 years. In July I separated it into several pots (I cut the roots and shortened them). Since then it doesn’t seem to be doing well, although it is growing new shoots. It has half-dried leaves (the mother plant) and the new shoots have tiny little leaves, although they are tall. Regarding the sun exposure, it has been on a balcony facing west, and in winter it has been on a closed balcony (both winters it was infested by aphids, which cleared up with the treatment recommended here). This winter I want to keep it outside, facing east. I don’t know how to proceed not to lose it, how much to water it and how to protect its roots. Since September it’s been outside in the garden, in pots, I haven’t watered it regularly because it’s been raining. Is it possible that the water from the rain didn’t reach it? I also have a Fargesia robusta that looked very nice on the balcony and was more resistant (last winter, although it was in the same closed balcony as the bamboo with aphids, they didn’t get on it). Now it has started to dry out too. Please help me with a recommendation for how to care for the outdoor potted bamboo over winter. Thank you!

Hello! From the information provided and the attached pictures, no pests or disease-specific symptoms can be observed. Most likely the bamboo’s deterioration was caused by environmental and/or care conditions: high temperatures, long exposure to strong solar radiation, dry wind, inadequate watering, etc.
Thus, it is recommended to ensure moderate humidity and to loosen the substrate, after which you can administer 1-2 treatments with a fertilizer such as AMN Nordalge, 500 ml, to support the plants’ resistance to stress factors and improve the quality of the substrate.
Also, a maintenance spray can be applied as a foliar regeneration treatment: Interior Plant Regeneration Ackerschachtelhalm RTU, 500 ml.
It is important that the pots have holes for water drainage and that watering is done moderately, with sufficient water, but allowing the substrate to dry before watering again. It is advisable to provide sufficient water (the substrate should be fully saturated) at longer intervals (rather than smaller volumes, applied often).
In winter the frequency of watering will be considerably reduced as the plant goes into dormancy. To protect the roots from potential frost, you can try burying the pots (the soil around the pot will help to insulate the roots and maintain moisture). In spring, when temperatures start to turn positive, the pots can be removed.
Next, it is recommended to stick to the general care conditions detailed in our article: Bamboo, planting guide and care work.-

Recommended articlesIoIoana30 November 2023Thank you! In the meantime I’ve looked more closely at the stems and I think it has some parasites near the ground. The white dots on the stems don’t seem to move, but a little higher up I saw something. In the picture the pests are not very clear, one appears in the third picture.

Hello. According to the latest photos you have attached, the plants are attacked by mealybugs or scale insects (Mealybugs in ornamental plants - pest management, Scale insects in ornamental plants - pest management). We recommend you to carry out a first treatment with the insecticide Mospilan 20 SG, 3 g, in a dose of 3 g/10 L water, and 7 days after the first treatment, you can carry out a second treatment with the insecticide Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml, in a dose of 7.5 ml/10 L water. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticides, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 L to the solutions. Spray the mixtures as finely as possible in order to achieve a more uniform distribution on the plant, on the topside and underside of the leaves and on the stem. It is important to prepare a volume of solution corresponding to a single treatment, respecting the mentioned dosage, because the already prepared mixture does not have a shelf life longer than 24 hours. It is important to mention that, after they die, these pests can remain attached to the leaves/branches/stem, so it is recommended to remove them with a wet sponge (as far as possible). 10 days after the above treatment you may also consider applying a maintenance product such as Organic Spray for Indoor Plants Zimmerpflanzen, 500ml, applied by spraying. Further, it is recommended to monitor the development of the plants for a while, and if other symptoms appear or the mentioned ones worsen, please send a message with photos.
