Apple tree, stripped stalk, white down on the stalk, woolly apple aphids
Hello, for a few days I have noticed that the stem of the apple tree has a white down. I didn’t want to take an amateur approach and order the first antifungal I found on the internet, so I thought I’d ask your advice. I did not apply any treatment. The apple tree is approx 3 meters tall, has been planted for 5-6 years, no apples so far.

Hello! The white fluff is characteristic of two pests: Metcalfa pruinosa (citrus flatid planthopper) or Eriosoma lanigerum (woolly apple aphid). The symptoms of the attack of the two pests are very similar and can only be established by closer examination. Please check if when you remove that down, you notice the presence of a butterfly (cicada), or if you notice the presence of woolly apple aphids (they are more visible and move more slowly than the cicada), and if they release a reddish substance when they are crushed.
CMCarmen Marcu28 October 2023I noticed the release of a reddish substance. Is there any treatment for these pests? Thanks in advance
From the attached pictures and the information given, the tree seems to show an attack of woolly apple aphids (Mealybugs in ornamental plants - pest management). Thus, for control, two treatments are recommended, with insecticides such as Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, in a dose of 5 ml / 10 l water and Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml, in a dose of 7.5 ml / 10 l water. The first treatment is carried out with Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, and after 7-10 days Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml is applied. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticide, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/ 10 l water to the solution. Spray the solutions as finely as possible (401) in order to achieve a more uniform distribution on the plant. Considering the high number of pests, in winter you can consider specific treatments during the dormancy period (after leaf fall), with copper fungicides and horticultural oil (more information can be found in our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
You may consider using copper fungicides such as Champ 77 WG, 20 g or Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g, or a horticultural oil such as Ovipron Top, 100 ml, according to the instructions on the label of each product.-
