Apple tree, planting in a soil that from the depth of 50 cm is 90% sand
Hello!
I own a plot of land / garden where I want to plant fruit trees for my own consumption. So far corn and vegetables have been planted there.
From digging deeper I found that starting from a depth of ~ 50 cm there is 90% sand or even sand with fine gravel and very little soil. I don’t know to what depth – but considering that there is a gravel pit in the vicinity – I assume that the layer is very deep.
My question is whether the apple tree will survive planted in this soil, or what fruit tree is suitable for this soil.
Thank you very much! -
Hello. For this kind of fields it is advisable to plant trees grafted on low vigor rootstocks, which have slightly shallow rooting (e.g. apple tree – rootstock M8, M4, cherry tree – rootstock Gisela 5, pear tree – rootstock quince tree etc). It is important to know that these plants need tutoring after planting, and their susceptibility to diseases and pests may be higher. They also require a higher supply of nutrients.
