Albizia, planting guide and care work

Albizia is a genus that includes over 160 species of trees and shrubs from the Mimosoideae subfamily (the Fabaceae family). These are widespread in tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, America, and Australia. In some regions, these are considered invasive species. Generally, they have low longevity. It has compound pinnate or double pinnate compound leaves, with small, fine leaflets. The flowers grow in clusters. It is distinguished by dense stamens, which are longer than the petals. The fruits are indehiscent, green pods.

The majority are planted for ornamental purposes, but these are also used in the manufacturing of furniture or herbal medicine. The name of the genus comes from the name of the Italian nobleman Filippo degli Albizzi, who first introduced the Albizia julibrissin species in Europe in the 18th century.

Species and varieties

Albizia julibrissin (silk tree)

It originated from the Far East. It grows as a tall tree, with a height of 12 m and a crown diameter of 4-6 m. The silk tree has an elegant aspect, with poorly ramified branches. The leaves are consisting of small leaflets. The flowering period is in June-August. It forms highly decorative inflorescences, made of silky-looking flowers, given by the light pink filamentous stamens. The fruits are indehiscent, flat pods, 12-13 cm long, light brown. Varieties:

“Rosea” – intense pink flowers. It is more common than the original species.

“Alba” – white flowers.

Environment conditions

Light. Prefers bright places, with direct sunlight and thrives poorly in shady conditions.

Temperature. Requires a mild climate, with high temperatures. It should be placed in a sheltered place because the low winter temperatures can affect the young parts.

Soil. It optimally grows in fertile, well-drained, acidic, or slightly alkaline soil.

Although it is quite resistant to drought, moderate watering is recommended to keep the soil moist.

During the growing season, it is recommended to apply a specific fertilizer, to favor the growth and flowering.

It is recommended to prune the unsightly branches, during early spring, before they start growing. The parts that have been affected by the disease, pests, or other causes can be removed at any time of the year. It is recommended to cover the wounds with wound sealer.

Planting

It can be done in spring or autumn, during the dormant period, at temperatures above 5° C, if the soil is not frozen and there are no freezing conditions. Be sure to purchase the planting material from authorized nurseries. Immediately after planting, tamp the soil well, to compact it and water it abundantly. After that, the soil should always be kept damp.

Diseases and pests

Albizia may be affected by fusarium wilt (Fusarium), which causes branch wilting. The pests that can appear are Albizia Psylla, mealybugs, mites, and various species of caterpillars.

Propagation

Albizia can be propagated by seeds, harvested during autumn (October), and sown during spring, in pots, on the balcony, or in a sheltered space. You can use a special substrate, which should be permanently maintained damp. After 2 years, you will be able to plant the seedlings in the garden.
