Works in the third year (III) after planting the grapevine

Published on: January 22, 2022 Modified on: 28 April 2024

The works carried out in the third year after planting the grapevine are similar to those carried out in the previous year (second year) to which the following are added: shape correction cuttings (works in green that are necessary to achieve the desired type of cutting) and preparing the stumps for fruiting.

Thus, in spring, after the danger of frost has passed, the shape correction cuts will be done, carried out differentiated, adapted to each type of cut, followed by cutting the roots of the grapevine (this work will be repeated in August), and by the inspection of the support system.

Shape correction cuttings

Shaping the stumps with low steering:
  • When cutting, leave 2 cordons with 8-10 meshes and 2 spurs with 2-3 meshes each;
  • In the case of vines with a less vigorous growth, leave a cordon with 6-8 meshes and a spur.
Shaping the stumps with semi-high and high steering:
  • The stem and eventually the cordons are cut;
  • Choose the cane located at the bottom on the cordon from the previous year and cut about 10 cm below the first wire of the trellis – with the purpose of shaping the stem;
  • On the remaining portion of the cane, the meshes will be removed, except for the 3-4 from the top;
  • Oftentimes, the extra shoots are removed, after they have started the vegetative growth period, when they reach a length of 5-10 cm.
  • If the cane chosen for shaping the stump is over 8 mm in diameter, it will be steered on the load-bearing wire to the adjacent stump or up to the thickness limit of 8 mm. There it is cut, thus forming a unilateral cane.
  • The remaining canes are tied, to the load-bearing wires or to the tutors, depending on the case..

In the third year, a special emphasis is placed on the works that have the purpose of fortifying the stumps, in order to prepare them for fruiting.

Works for fortifying the stumps

  • Organic and chemical fertilization, choosing specific products.

  • Completing the existing gaps in the plantation;
  • Cutting the roots of the vine;
  • Binding and steering the shoots;
  • Protecting the vines in winter, by mount layering in the unprotected area, and in the protected cultivation area, the canes will be buried.
  • Carrying out phytosanitary treatments during the vegetative growth period, in order to maintain a healthy foliage and implicitly a good phytosanitary condition.

In this sense, treatments with specific fungicides and insecticides will be carried out, depending on the pathogen / pest targeted.
