Strawberry powdery mildew-identify-and-control

Strawberry powdery mildew, Sphaerotheca macularis, is a fungal disease that was first reported in 1958.

Symptoms. On the organs of plants and especially on the leaves, the fungus forms initially small, white powdery colonies on the underside of the leaves. After a while, these colonies enlarge and cover the entire lower leaf surface. As a result, the edges of the leaves roll up. Also, on the surface of the upper and lower leaf purple reddish blotches appear. The attacked plants grow less, the leaves are deformed and the fruits are of poor quality, small, and don’t ripen.

The pathogen. The fungus Sphaerotheca macularis is transmitted during the growing season through spores, and in spring, the spores will be eliminated from the resistance mycelium or the resistance fruits. The fungus survives from one year to another in the form of mycelium, in the attacked plants.

Prevention and control. To reduce the source of fungal infection, after the crop is harvested it is recommended to mow it, and the resulting plant’s debris to be burned. During the growing season, to control strawberry powdery mildew it is recommended to apply treatments with specific fungicides.
