Smoke Tree, planting guide and care work

cotinus smoke tree

Cotinus is a genus of decorative shrubs in the Anacardiaceae family, the best-known species being Cotinus coggygria (Smoke tree). Cotinus coggygria, popularly called smoke tree is a large shrub, vigorous that can grow up to 5 m, with green leaves, elliptical-obovate, deciduous, which in autumn become orange-reddish.

The inflorescences are grouped in large panicles with small, insignificant, green-yellow flowers. In the fruiting phase (June-July) they become feather-like, very decorative, at first being pink, then gray. The fruit is a small, dry drupe. It is used alone or in groups.

Cultivars:
  • Cotinus coggygria ‘Rubrifolius’ – cultivar that is distinguished through its dark red leaves and reddish panicles.
  • Cotinus coggygria ‘Purpureus’ – it has green leaves with purple panicles;
  • Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ – it has dark red leaves and reddish panicles;
  • Cotinus coggygria ‘ Ancot’ – it has golden leaves;

Environmental conditions

Light. It grows both in partially shaded places and in direct sunlight, but in the case of planting in partially shaded places the leaves grow less, requiring regular pruning for the shrub to have a more compact/dense appearance.

Temperature. It is a thermophilic species, resistant to drought. It grows and develops best in areas with moderate atmospheric temperatures and humidity.

Soil. The smoke tree is not pretentious in terms of soil, it grows and develops in almost all types of soil, as long as they are well-drained. However, it is also a loving species of limestone and it does not tolerate poorly drained soils or those in which water puddles.

Watering

The smoke tree is a drought-resistant species, but young plants need regular watering, by using a sufficient volume of water so that it infiltrates into the soil without forming puddles.

Fertilization

For vigorous growth as well as to highlight the ornamental qualities, it is recommended to periodically administer specific fertilizers.

Recommended products

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product
Pruning

The smoke tree needs minimal interventions in terms of shape correction cuts. Dry or affected parts can be removed whenever needed, but to adjust the shape or to revitalize the shrub, the optimal time to make the cuts is in spring.

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product
Propagation

It can be done through seeds, layering, or cuttings (semi-wooden, harvested in July). The sowing must be done in light, sandy-loamy soils, in spring or autumn with seeds layered in cold hotbeds. Layering is done before the beginning of the vegetative growth period, through simple or mound layering.

Planting

It can be planted in spring or autumn, during the vegetative dormancy period, at temperatures above 5° C, if the soil is not frozen and there is no danger of frost. Be sure to purchase planting material from authorized nurseries. Immediately after planting, the soil must be well-trodden and watered abundantly.

Diseases

If the soil has poor drainage, the smoke tree is susceptible to the attack of soil pathogens (e.g. verticillium), against which it is recommended to carry out soil treatments with specific fungicides. At the same time, in conditions of high atmospheric humidity and temperatures, it is prone to the attack of various foliar diseases.

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product
Pests

As pests, the smoke tree can be prone to the attack of different species of aphids.

In addition:
  • it is a species resistant to smoke and dust;
  • it cannot withstand strong winds;
  • after crushing the leaves, it emits a carrot-like odor;
