ivy care guide

Hedera helix or ivy is a hanging and creeping plant of the Araliaceae family, native to Europe and Western Asia. Its many varieties are appreciated for their decorative value, both outdoors (on fences, walls, tree trunks) and indoors (in hanging pots). It has long and supple stems, with aerial roots with which they cling to various supports. It has an alternate leaf arrangement, they have dimensions of up to 5-10 cm in length and can be palmate or cordate, with different pigmentation depending on the variety. The flowers appear in late summer-early autumn and are small, yellow-green umbels. The fruits can be dark-colored, purple, or orange and are toxic to humans. It has a longevity of up to 3 or 6 years in pots and can reach a length of 2 m.

Varieties

Varieties with small leaves are preferred to be placed indoors. Among these, the most common are:

  • Hedera helix Buttercup with broad, lobed leaves, yellow in color.
  • Hedera helix Eva has gray leaves, with white edges, divided into 3 lobes.
  • Hedera helix Glacier, with small leaves, superficially lobed, pigmented with silver-gray and with white edges.
  • Hedera helix Goldchild has leaf edges that are broad and yellow. The aged leaves are greenish-gray, with pale yellow.
  • Hedera helix Luzii, with light-green leaves and dark spots.
  • Hedera helix Sagittaefolia has narrow, trilobate, dark green leaves.
  • Hedera helix White Knight is distinguished through its white leaves with green edges.

Light. It prefers partially shaded places and likes both natural and artificial light. During the summer, the indoor plants can be kept outside, in a shady place, protected from the sun’s rays.

Temperature. It grows optimally at temperatures of 18° C and it can withstand minimum temperatures of up to 0° C. In winter it is recommended to be kept at temperatures of 8-10° C, maximum 15° C.

Humidity. Ivy needs high atmospheric humidity, so it is recommended to spray its leaves weekly with water.

Substrate. It must be light, rich in nutrients and it should allow good water drainage. It can be made of leaf mold, garden soil, and peat in equal parts. To improve drainage, a layer of gravel can be placed at the base of the pot.

Watering. Both potted and outdoor plants should be watered weekly during the vegetative growth season. In winter, the frequency of watering should be reduced, adding water only when the substrate is dry on the surface.

Fertilizer. During the vegetative growth season, March-September, it is recommended to administer a special liquid fertilizer for green plants.

Repotting. It should be done once every two years, in the spring. The potted plants can be transplanted at any time of the year, in a slightly larger pot.

Pruning. Annually, in March, it is recommended to cut the stems in half.

Propagation. Ivy is usually propagated through stem cuttings, which are cut in spring or autumn. It is preferable to choose young cuttings, 8-12 cm long.

Pests. During dry and very hot summers, ivy is susceptible to mite attack. Wooly apple aphids and European fruit lecanium may also infest the plant.

In addition:

  • in pots, ivy blooms very rarely.
  • you can also place it together with other plants, in a wider pot.
  • if the substrate is too damp and in case of strong heat, the roots may rot, and the ivy will be irreversibly affected.
  • during the vegetative dormancy period, in winter, no fertilizer should be administered.
  • the leaves should be dusted regularly with a damp cloth.
