Hibiscus, pest and disease control

hibiscus-pests-diseases

Hibiscus plants do not have the same environmental conditions as in their area of origin, so they can be easily susceptible to diseases and pests attacks. The plants must be tended to according to their requirements, monitored to detect in time the problems that may occur, and if you notice the presence of pests/diseases, it is recommended that to isolate the plant in question, so as not to affect the others.

Physiological disorders

Buds dropping may be caused by high humidity or temperatures that are too low. Thus, it is recommended to water the plant moderately, so that the substrate is kept moist, but not too wet. In order to bloom, Hibiscus needs a temperature of 20º C, while temperatures lower than 10º C can affect the plant.

Root rot is often caused by excessive watering or poor drainage. It is recommended to follow the watering instructions for hibiscus and to use a light substrate, which allows fast water drainage.

Young leaves discoloration is a symptom of iron deficiency, so it is recommended to apply a special fertilizer for roses (which also contains iron) during the growing season, repeating the application according to the instructions on the label.

Whitish, dry spots on the leaves represent sunburn caused by direct sunlight. As a result, hibiscus should be placed in a bright place, away from direct sunlight during the day.

Browning/blackening of leaf edges occurs after excessive fertilization, therefore it is recommended to apply the fertilizer according to the instructions on the label.

Tips for proper Hibiscus care:

  • moderate watering and fertilization.
  • the optimum temperature is 24º C.
  • prune in March to stimulate flowering.
  • plenty of light, but filtered.
