Bunt

Bunt is a disease affecting wheat and other cereal grains caused by fungi of the genus Tilletia. The characteristic symptoms are manifested from the seedling stage until full maturity. The attacked plants do not undergo obvious changes until this stage. Stems, leaves, and spikelets of attacked plants are bluish-green, compared to the yellowish-green of healthy plants. In general, following the attack, the wheat grains are destroyed and their contents are replaced by malt dust. A batch of seed from a field heavily infested with bunt can be recognized both by its characteristic smell and by the darker color of the dusty grains during threshing and handling.
