Tradescantia, identification and propagation tips
I received these 2 seedlings that look like Tradescantia and I would like to know if they belong to this family or not and how they should be treated. At the moment I have them in a glass of water and they have no root, they are in a bit of a bad state and I hope I can save them. They are a bit wilted and one has a leaf with a small cut.

Hello. In the attached photos a species of Tradescantia can indeed be identified. Propagating these plants vegetatively (from plant parts) is relatively easy, as the rooting capacity is high both under water and in substrate conditions. Thus, since the rooting process can be more easily monitored this way, you can consider keeping the seedlings in water until the roots form. To stimulate rooting, it is recommended to shorten the seedlings and remove some leaves, so that each seedling has only 1-3 leaves at the top. The weak or damaged leaves should be removed completely (these can also be placed in water, as roots may also form at the base of detached leaves – seedling leaves). After the roots have appeared, the seedlings can be planted in a pot of optimal size (not too large), in a fertile substrate such as Universal Substrate Promo Garden, 20 litres. To stimulate root expansion, immediately after planting, you can consider applying a natural fertilizer that helps improve the quality of the substrate and supports the development of the root system, such as AMN BonaVita, 500 ml, by watering at the roots, according to the instructions on the label.
However, it is known that the success of vegetative propagation can be influenced by many biotic and abiotic factors and is not guaranteed. More information on the care of this plant species can be found in our article: Tradescantia, plant care and growing guide.-
