1 Wish green leaves
Sweet potatoes, unknown disease, crystals on their leaves
Hello, I am cultivating sweet potato seedlings, but there are some crystals on their leaves. There are no visible pests on any part of the plant. I lost a Hibiscus 2 years ago with the same symptoms. The leaves bend, seem to dehydrate, the plant loses its healthy appearance and noticeably suffers despite some explanations that those crystals are produced by the plant itself and do not affect it. I have applied antifungals and insecticides to the Hibiscus but to no avail. Subsequently I removed the “crystals” but they reappeared until they dried up the plant completely. I would like to at least save and propagate these sweet potatoes. Thanks

Hello! The aspect of the plant is normal. The crystals that appear on the leaves of the sweet potato plants are commonly known as calcium oxalate crystals, because the plant is very rich in calcium oxalate, which is removed by the stomata of the plant through the process of guttation and thus the crystals form. Most of the time, the formation of crystals is caused by abiotic stress such as temperature differences, low temperature, high humidity or inadequate watering. For the time being, you can consider removing the crystals from the leaves using a damp cloth, watering correctly and respecting the needs of the plant.
