How can I store acorns before sowing?

Hello,

I would like to know how I can keep the acorns that I have harvested, without them being damaged, for later planting, which I don’t know when it will take place.

Hello. According to the studies it is recommended that the acorns be stored in a humid and well-ventilated environment, at temperatures close to 0 °C. You may consider storing acorns in sand or moist peat kept at temperatures between -2 and +2 °C (e.g. in perforated wooden boxes). In general, in these conditions, acorns retain their germination capacity at about 6 months.
However, the optimal storage and conservation conditions, as well as the optimal sowing period, differ depending on the species (some species ripen annually, others ripen biennially, and others have different germination requirements). The storage period also depends on the species, but in general, acorns lose their germination capacity when their own humidity drops below 40%.
In some cases, acorns can be stored in hermetically sealed plastic bags and kept at low temperatures (e.g. in the refrigerator).
As germination capacity is influenced by numerous biotic and abiotic factors, it is not possible to predict the success of storage by the methods mentioned above. To stimulate the growth and development of the new plants, you may consider using a specially formulated fertiliser after sprouting (eg. root stimulator Wurzel-Fit, 900 g or AMN Verde, 500 ml, according to label recommendations).
