      Celeriac – woodlice attack

I tried growing Celeriac for the first time last year. I grew what I thought was going to be a successful crop, however every root I pulled was full of holes up to about 1 – 2″ long and filled with woodlice (mostly “baby” woodlice). By the time I cut round the holes and removed the woodlice, there was hardly any usable celeriac rood left. Does anyone have any advice about how I can avoid a repeat infestation this year?

Hello, in general, the woodlice enlarge wounds already inflicted by slugs, wireworms, or other pests (their mouthparts aren’t strong enough to affect undamaged, hard parts of plants, such as bulbs and tubers). In this case, because there are no products that can be applied against them, and because they prefer damp and dark places, it is usually advisable to follow some cultural hygiene measures in the garden, in order not to create a favorable environment for them. These measures include the removal of plant debris, mending damaged wooden structures (if you have any) because will help prevent them from hiding in these, keeping composting areas apart from growing areas (if you have any), etc.
In addition, to increase the plant’s resistance to disease and pests, and to promote healthy growth, it is recommended to regularly apply an organic fertilizer specially formulated for the nutritional needs of vegetables, such as Manna Bio Gemusedunger Fertilizer, 1 kg.
