      Cabbage attacked by pests

In a small cabbage crop, I found pests, they look like slugs but they are small, 1-3 cm long, 0. 5-1 cm wide, white on one side and dark brown on the other. In the evening, when they came out on the outer leaves, they were very sticky. I mention that I applied Mospilan and Decis in August-September, once. It was only when I started harvesting that I noticed their presence. The crop is in the sun, I watered it until September 2-3 times a week, and after that, once a week because it was no longer needed (the soil was wet). In another area of the garden, lot 2, I have another layer of the same size but there the cabbage didn’t grow. Questions: 1. What pest attacked my cabbage? What can I apply against the pests? Can I still apply insecticide now? When can I harvest? Does the fact that I noticed a sticky substance on the good leaves of the cabbage still allow me to use it raw? 2. Why didn’t the cabbage grow in lot 2? Thank you!

Hello. In the absence of images of the pest, it is not possible to specify exactly what caused this attack, but it is possible that the plants were attacked by slugs. In this case, it is recommended to apply a product such as ( Gel Bio Plantella, 1 litre ), the product is applied through the nozzle, forming a barrier that completely encircles the area that needs protection. The application can be done at a distance of about 20 cm from the plants, directly on the ground. In the following year, 7 days before sowing/planting, you can apply molluscicidal granules, such as ( Optimol, 100 g ). As for the sticky substance on the leaves, it may be the mucus secreted by the slug, which helps it move more easily, and before consumption, it is advisable to wash the leaves very well. In the case of cabbages that do not form a head, this phenomenon can be caused by several factors, such as the use of the uncertified seed, insufficient light, excessive moisture in the soil, lack of balanced fertilization. In the future, it is recommended to use certified seeds, from a safe source, comply with environmental requirements (light, temperature, humidity), balanced fertilization depending on the state of soil supply with nutrients. For more information on growing and caring for cabbage, you can access our article (Cabbage, information about crop management). At the same time, it is indicated to carry out preventive treatments in vegetation.
