      2 Wish green leaves

      Bonsai, Crassula, fallen leaves

Hello! I have two bonsai trees that have been losing their leaves for about 6 months now. I haven’t changed the environmental or watering conditions or the pot, so I suspect it is a pest. What can I do to help them recover? Thank you!

Hello. In order to help you with recommendations, please mention how long you have owned the plants and describe the environmental and care conditions provided (temperature, humidity, draughts, previous transplanting, how and when the watering was carried out during the growing season and in this period, the amount of water used per watering, whether you applied fertilizers, whether the substrate is damp at any point, etc.).

Hello! I have the plants for about 3 years, I keep them in the room at a temperature of about 22-23 degrees, they were transplanted 1 year ago, I water them twice a week during the cold season. It is true that I have not used fertilizers in the last months. The substrate is dry before I water again. Basically I have not changed anything about the way in which I care for them.
      Thank you!

Hello. In this case, the deterioration may have occurred as a result of a combination of biotic and abiotic factors, including the stress suffered when transplanting into larger pots (succulents grow best in smaller pots, where the substrate can dry out thoroughly in a short period of time), possibly unsuitable substrate properties, high and constant substrate humidity, lack of fertilization, lack of bonsai-specific pruning, the occurrence of plant pathogens and others, depending on the case.
The plant in the second photo seems to be affected to a great extent and will most likely never recover. In the case of the larger plant, if you think that it still has a chance of regeneration, you may consider asking a specialist for help to trim it properly (at root and crown level). The proportion of the roots and crown should be optimal after this intervention. Once this operation has been carried out, it is recommended to transplant the crassula into a pot of optimal size, respectively into a suitable substrate (e.g. Bonsai Professional Substrate, 5 litres).
Subsequently, it is recommended to maintain constant the environmental conditions in the premises and to respect its specific care requirements: Crassula ovata, plant care and growing guide. As mold on the surface of the substrate is an indicator of high and/or constant humidity, it is recommended that watering be carried out moderately, with optimal amounts of water, only when the surface layer of the substrate is dry. Being a succulent species, it tolerates a lack of water for a certain period rather than excessive moisture. Water should not stagnate at the base of the pot or in the tray. Double pots can limit the optimal air circulation in the substrate, thus creating conditions for fungus to grow and develop.
Given the current state of the plant and the aforementioned, it is not possible to predict its exact future development. It is recommended to monitor the evolution of the plant for a period of time. In case other symptoms specific to diseases or pests appear, we are waiting for your message with photos.
During the growing period, in order to ensure the necessary nutrients, you can consider the regular application of a fertilizer that is specially formulated for the nutritional requirements of succulent plants, such as Kakteendunger Bonsai & Cacti Fertilizer, 250 ml, applied according to the label recommendations.
