Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is a fruit-bearing shrub belonging to the family Caprifoliaceae. It grows as a shrub, reaching up to 7 m in height. It can also be found spontaneously in oak and beech forests or at the edge of rivers. The leaves are pinnately-compound. The elder has small, white flowers grouped in umbel-like inflorescences. They have a pleasant smell and are hermaphrodite. Flowering takes place in May-July. The elderberries are spherical in shape and are called berries. They are arranged in clusters.
In terms of environmental requirements, elderberry plants are resistant to low winter temperatures.Â
