Sage (Salvia officinalis) belongs to the Lamiaceae family and originates from the submontane areas of the Mediterranean Sea, being widespread as a medicinal and aromatic plant. Salvia is a sub-shrub with a well-branched root system, erect stem, lignified at the lower part. The leaves are elongated-ovate, pubescent, greenish-grey and the flowers are blue-violet.
Sage leaves are used for flavoring culinary preparations, as well as in cosmetics, the perfume industry, and for therapeutic purposes. The plant contains essential oils.
