Hi. In the spring of 2022, I established a Thornfree blackberry crop and now in the spring of 2023 when removing the cuttings, I noticed that these spots have appeared on some plants. The spots are only at the base of the roots about 50 cm, and up to the top of the plant the canes are healthy and beautiful in color. I have cut all the canes where necessary but I don’t know if the cuttings will suffer in the future, e.g. if it is the disease spur blight, it may have been transmitted to the plant and possible customers may have surprises. Should I apply special treatment to this problem? After pruning I sprayed with Champ 77 with a repeat at one week. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
Hello. The symptoms on the canes are similar to those caused by spur blight (Didymella applanata), but for exact identification, it is necessary to perform a laboratory analysis. This can be done at a Plant Protection Institute in your area. In this case, for safety, it is recommended to remove all affected canes (if you still have affected plants) and destroy them by burning.
In the future, in order to prevent the appearance and spread of this disease, it is recommended to take measures to improve air circulation inside the plants (to allow faster drying of leaves/canes and light infiltration), weed control, rational fertilization (avoid fertilizers with a high nitrogen content), disease and pest control.
Also, in order to maintain a good phytosanitary condition, it is recommended to carry out preventive treatments during the growing season, as well as those in the dormancy period (Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products).
In addition, during the growing season, you can consider regular application of an organic fertilizer such as AMN Nordalge, 500 ml, applied by watering, according to the recommendations on the label (also mentioned on the product page). It increases plant resistance to pest/disease attacks, supports plants in stressful conditions, and stimulates healthy growth.
