Zephyranthes, planting guide and care work
Zephyranthes, popularly called the “zephyr lily” or “fairy lily”, is a genus of plants native to the western hemisphere, cultivated for ornamental purposes, comprising over 70 species and numerous hybrids. The plants have various heights, from 8 to 30-40 cm, and bloom from summer until the first frost. The flowers are made up of 6 identical petals and are colored in pink, purple, red, yellow, and white. The leaves are glossy, light green, lanceolate, and thin. The bulbs can bloom several times a year, especially after a period of heavy rain.
Species
Zephyranthes candida. It presents the general characteristics described above, with the specification that it has a height of 20-30 cm. The bulbs are spherical, about 3 cm in diameter, wrapped in a brown lamina. The flowers are white, sometimes with light shades of pink-purple towards the exterior of the petals.
Zephyranthes citrina. It is native to Mexico. It has the same properties as Z. candida, but it has fragrant flowers, colored in bright yellow.
Zephyranthes carinata. It is taller than the other two species and it has larger flowers (about 6-8 cm), colored in light pink.
Environmental conditions
Zephyranthes grow best in the sun, but can also withstand partially shaded places. The soil in which it is planted must have a medium to high fertility and drain water well. It can be made of peat, gravel, sometimes mixed with a little sand.
The soil must be kept moist during the summer and must be watered so that it does not dry out completely. Also in the summer months, you can use a liquid fertilizer. It should be noted that when they bloom, water requirements increase.

During the winter, due to very low temperatures, there is a risk that the bulbs will not survive outside. Thus, in autumn, after the leaves have turned yellow and started to fall, they must be cut, and the bulbs must be removed and kept dry in a dark, cool, and well-ventilated room.
In the case of hybrids, the annual removal and replanting of the bulbs stimulate the redevelopment of the flowers. If left in the ground, the hybrid bulbs tend to shrink and the plants stop producing flowers.

Propagation
Zephyranthes are plants that are normally propagated through bulbs, but you can also collect the seeds if you wish. When harvesting seeds, it is ideal to sow them before they dry out, as they will germinate slower this way. After harvesting, however, the seeds need a period of 7-10 days to mature.
When propagating the plant through bulbs, they must be taken out and replanted in autumn or early spring, the depth of planting in pots being 3-4 cm.
Planting bulbs
To plant Zephyranthes bulbs you need to find an area where the soil is well-drained and where the plants will be able to benefit from a lot of light. The holes should be 5-6 cm deep and the bulbs must be planted 8-10 cm apart. After planting, water well, allowing the water to be absorbed into the soil. After a few weeks, the leaves should sprout, and the plants will bloom towards the end of summer.
It grows very well in the garden with Amaryllis, gladiolus, lilies.
