The zebra plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) is a compact, slightly branched shrub. It belongs to the Acanthaceae family, genus Aphelandra and it is a plant native to Brazil. The leaves are elliptical, have white ribs , the flowers form between June and October, being yellow or red. The name zebra plant comes from the presence of the ribs on the glossy green leaves.



Environmental factors

Light

It is a light-loving plant, but the sun rays must not touch its leaves for a long time, as burns can occur on the leaves. That is why it is recommended that the light be indirect.

Humidity

The zebra plant has medium humidity requirements. It is recommended that watering be done regularly, leaving the substrate to dry (4-5 cm from the surface) before watering again. After, it is recommended that the excessive water from the tray under the pot be removed to prevent root rot.

Temperature

These species prefer constant temperatures of 18 °C, and they are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature but also to drafts.

Fertilization

It is recommended to administer fertilizers throughout the vegetative growth period. The substrate must be moist before fertilization, otherwise burns can occur on the plant.
