Zamioculcas-zamiifolia-growing-guide

Zamioculcas (common name “Zanzibar gem”, “ZZ plant”, “eternity plant”) is a genus of flowering plant in the Araceae family, which contains the species Zamioculcas zamiifolia. It is a perennial tropical plant native to East Africa, from Southern Kenya to Northeastern South Africa. The natural environment of the plant consists of rocky soils. Zamioculcas is a plant that lasts long periods without water, alternating this with torrential rains. During torrential rains, the plant quickly stores water so that it can cope without water for weeks. Although Zamioculcas has been botanically recognized since 1892, it has been cultivated for the past 15 years. This is due to Dutch growers who started breeding it in 1996.

Description. It is a herbaceous plant that has a height of 45-60 centimeters and a rhizome. It is normally evergreen, but becomes drier during drought, surviving drought due to the rhizome that stores water until precipitation occurs. The leaves are 40-60 centimeters long. The flowers are represented by a spadix, 5-7 centimeters long, colored in yellow to brown or bronze, and partially hidden between the bases of the leaves; flowering takes place from mid-summer to early autumn.

Light. Zamioculcas can grow in low light, but it grows faster in moderate light. Outdoors, the plant grows well in indirect sunlight or in a location where in the morning it is sunny and in the afternoon it benefits from the shade. For indoor cultivation, Zamioculas prefer indirect sunlight. For this, place the plant a few meters from a sunny window, which is covered with a curtain, or in front of a window with a northern exposure. Zamioculas can withstand different lighting conditions, but you must keep in mind that they will not grow if it is placed near a south-facing window.

Temperature. Zamioculas need an average temperature of 13° C to 26° C. Higher temperatures will boost growth and development.

Substrate. Although Zamioculcas is a plant that tolerates different types of soil, it’s important to have good drainage. In addition, a certain amount of sand or perlite should be mixed in the substrate, as they will improve permeability.

Watering

It should be done moderately, leaving the first 3-4 cm of the substrate to dry before you water the plant again. It is also not advisable for water to stagnate in the pot’s tray.

Fertilization

It should be done during the growing season, using a balanced fertilizer, specially formulated for indoor plants.

Pruning

Most of the time, it does not need shape corrections. You should remove the wilting leaves from the base of the stem. Once a stem has grown much larger than all the other stems, you can remove that stem or cut it to the size of the others.

Repotting

Repotting should be done in spring, when the plant exceeds the size of the pot in which it was grown, or whenever necessary, given that it is a plant with rapid growth and development.

Diseases and pests

Excessive moisture in the substrate can cause various diseases, which can be treated with specific fungicides. The most common pests are aphids and mealybugs.
