Weigela (Weigela spp.) is a decorative shrub with flowers, which is part of the Caprifoliaceae family, originating from Asia. It can be easily cultivated in gardens and parks, having minimal requirements in terms of environmental conditions. Weigela stands out for its funnel-shaped flowers, light pink, white or red, depending on the cultivar. The flowering period is from late spring to early summer. The leaves vary from dark green to light green or can be variegated, making the plants beautiful looking even when they are not in bloom. Weigela can also be grown as a hedge due to the high height and thickness of the bush.

Weigela – varieties and cultivars
  • W. My Monet Sunset: it is a small shrub, with variegated leaves, which acquire a reddish tint with the arrival of autumn. The flowers are small and pink;
  • W. Alexandra: it has fuchsia flowers and dark purple leaves;
  • W. Golden Jackpot: it stands out for its golden-yellow foliage, adorned with rose-colored flowers;
  • W. Crimson Kisses: it stands out for its dark red flowers, which appear at the beginning of spring. The shrub periodically reblooms throughout the summer.

Environmental conditions

Light. It is a light-loving plant and it is important that it be placed in an area where it can benefit from direct sunlight for a large part of the day. In areas with a warm climate, it can tolerate partial shade in particularly hot afternoons.

Temperature. It is not picky in terms of temperature and can withstand even lower temperatures. However, in areas with a cold climate, it is recommended to choose some cold-resistant varieties or grow the plant in a flowerpot/container, to shelter it indoors during the winter.

Soil. It can be cultivated on most types of soil, but it grows and develops on well drained, fertile soils with a slightly acidic or alkaline pH (5.5-7.5).
