Turf rolls – installation and care guide
It is considered that unlike the lawn set up by sowing, the one obtained from turf rolls is less resistant, the plants are sensitized by transport and handling, and the chances of success are lower. However, a resilient, healthy-looking lawn can be obtained quickly and easily if certain stages and rules of care are followed.
The stages of setting up and caring for a lawn obtained from rolls
- Land preparation (cleaning, loosening, soil correction, levelling, compaction and optional fertilization);
- Measuring the land;
- Setting up the turf (placing the rolls, correcting of gaps, rolling);
- Watering the new lawn;
- Applying fertilizers for rooting;
- Mowing and maintenance of the new turf rolls (first mowing, regular cleaning, fertilization with specific products).
Land preparation
The land on which the lawn rolls are to be placed must have a light texture and ensure good drainage.
In the first phase, it will be cleaned of weeds, plant debris, stones, other materials, etc.
After that, the soil will be loosened to a depth of at least 15 cm. At this stage, garden soil can be added if the soil layer is not enough and the soil structure can be improved. You can add well-decomposed garden mould or compost if the soil is sandy. If it is clayey, with a heavy structure, fine gravel or sand can be incorporated to improve drainage and in smaller parts, organic matter.
The last stage of land preparation consists in levelling it, in order to obtain a straight surface. Finally, uniform stomping of the ground to lightly compact the soil is recommended.
Before placing the rolls, a fertilization can be carried out with a specific product that needs to be well incorporated into the soil (pre-seed).
Measuring the land
It is extremely important to measure the required surface area of the lawn. It is recommended to purchase rolls for an area slightly larger than the measured one, in order to cover any remaining spaces that have not been taken into account.
Placing the rolls
First of all, it is very important that the rolls are placed immediately after they have been purchased. The lawn carpet will be set up on a wet soil. The rolls will be unfolded right next to each other, without leaving any free spaces and avoiding their overlap. In the case of irregular edges, the lawn rolls will be cut. After placing the grass carpet, it is advisable to stomp it slightly to eliminate any air gaps and ensure better contact of the plants with the soil.
Watering
The new lawn will be watered abundantly immediately after it has been set up. This will help settle the soil and grass and bring the moisture back to the optimal parameters.
For 4 weeks after placing the rolls, the watering will be carried out daily. In the next period, during the warm season, the lawn will be watered as needed (in the morning). If it is carried out in the morning, it allows the water to enter the soil and drain it during the day, avoiding long-term moisture, which would favor the development of pathogenic fungi.
Fertilization
After placing the lawn rolls and watering them, for the proper development of the roots, it is recommended to repeatedly apply an organic fertilizer with the purpose of stimulating the rooting. The first fertilization with specific lawn products can be applied after 6 weeks, when the plants have already formed resistant roots.

Pruning and maintenance
After 4-5 weeks, the lawn should already be well rooted, so you can carry out the first mowing. It is important that at this stage you do not cut too much from the height of the grass (use the highest setting of the lawn mower). The cut grass needs to be gathered, leaving the lawn free, to allow ventilation and easy access of light among the grass blades. It is very important that the lawn is kept clean, free of plant debris, which by decomposition can promote the development of pathogenic fungi.
It is important not to intensively transit the new lawn for about 6 weeks after setting it up. If it has rooted well, after 3-4 weeks, light traffic should not affect the plants.
