tomato-leaf-mold-cladosporium

Tomato leaf mold, Cladosporium fulvum is common in tomato greenhouse and polyhouse and is rarely encountered on field crops.

Symptoms – tomato leaf mold

The infestation starts from the basal leaves and spreads to the upper ones. Small, yellowish spots occur on the leaves’ upper side, which then enlarges and becomes yellow. On the leaves’ bottom side, a white puff appears alongside the stains which turn brown and finally brown-violet. It consists of the fungus’ conidiophores and conidia. In favorable environmental conditions, in case of severe attacks, the spots converge. The attacked tissues turn brown and necrotize, which determines the plants’ debilitation.

The pathogen is Cladosporium fulvum. Transmission of this from one year to the next is through the resistance mycelium in the affected organs or through the conidia that resist in greenhouse conditions. The pathogen’s spread during the vegetation period is ensured by conidia.

Prevention and control. As preventive measures, it is recommended to disinfect the greenhouses, gather and destroy plant debris, cultivate resistant varieties, and hybrids. During the vegetation period, apply treatments with specific fungicides.
