Tobacco blue mold (Peronospora tabacina) – identify and control

Tobacco blue mould-identify-and-control

Tobacco blue mold, Peronospora tabacina is a disease quite common in all tobacco-growing countries.

Symptoms. Tobacco blue mold is observed from the first stages of growth, when on the first leaves appear circular, yellow spots, without precise edges, and the stem is elongated. On bigger seedlings, tobacco blue mold can be seen by the curling of the leaves. They are soon covered with a gray-blue fuzz, turn yellow, and rot.

In the field, the attack is intense in crops located on wetlands or if they are found in river meadows. Yellow spots appear on the leaves, without precise, very large edges. They enlarge and cover big portions of the leaf. On the underside, the spots are covered with a gray-blue or purple fuzz. The parasitic tissues turn brown and the leaves dry out.

The pathogen is Peronospora tabacina. The transmission of the pathogen from one year to another is ensured by the resistance spores, which are found in the plant debris left in the field. During the growing season, the spores that are carried by wind and water, ensure the infection of other organs of the same plant or of neighboring plants.

Prevention and control. It is recommended to plant healthy plants and to apply treatments with specific fungicides.
