Lobularia maritima, also known as Sweet alyssum, is an annual herbaceous plant, which is part of the Brassicaceae family, originating in Europe. It grows quickly and it is used as a decorative plant thanks to its flowers and it is grown directly in the garden, next to borders or for ground cover. At the same time, it can be grown in pots or planters.

The plant can reach a height of 25-30 cm and has a branched stem, on which lanceolate, sessile, gray-green leaves are attached. The flowers are small, cross-shaped, consisting of 4 petals, variously colored: white, pink, purple, yellow, etc. The flowers are clustered in globular inflorescences and give off a pleasant fragrance. The plant blooms from spring to early autumn.

Sweet alyssum –  varieties and cultivars
  • L. maritima ‘Easter Bonnet’: with white or lavender flowers. The plant blooms early;
  • L. maritima ‘New Carpet of Snow’: variety with slow growth and small white flowers;
  • L. maritima ‘Pastel Carpet’: it forms flowers in different shades of pink, lilac or cream;
  • L. maritima ‘Snow Princess’: vigorous variety with white, fragrant flowers.

Environmental conditions

Light. Sweet alyssum prefers bright places, where it can benefit from sunlight for at least 6 – 8 hours a day. In regions with hot summers, it is recommended to place the plants in areas where they can benefit from partial shade, especially in the afternoon.

Soil. It grows on well-drained, fertile soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. It is recommended to avoid wetland soils and those with poor drainage.

Sweet alyssum – care

Watering. Plants need to be watered moderately. The frequency of watering can increase in hot periods or in dry periods.

Fertilizing. Plants need fertilizers when the soil is poor in nutrients. Plants grown in flowerpots need regular fertilizing, using balanced fertilizers, specially formulated for flowering plants.

Pruning. To encourage the appearance of new flowers, it is recommended to remove the dried flowers. Also, shape corrections cuts can be carried out, to keep the appearance of the plant as pleasant as possible.

Propagation. Sweet alyssum is propagated by seeds. They can be sown indoors, approximately 8 weeks before the last expected frost in the spring. Also, the seeds can be sown directly in the garden, as soon as the soil has thawed and the temperatures are rising.

Sweet alyssum is prone to the appearance of downy mildew and rot (of the stem or the area between the roots and the stem)
