Sugar beet powdery mildew-identify-and-control

Sugar beet powdery mildew, Erysiphe betae it’s a common disease that can cause significant damage to sugar beet culture.

Symptoms. The disease can be easily recognized by the fine, whitish patches that can cover the entire leaf. The mycelium becomes later powdery white due to the spores, then gray due to fructifications, which are black. Under this powder, the tissues turn yellow, and the leaves turn brown and wilt prematurely. The disease is first observed on the leaves of plants for seed crops and every 1-2 weeks it will be observed on one-year-old beets. Periods with high temperatures and low humidity, cause a slight wilting of foliage, a favorable condition for the onset of the disease.

The pathogen is Erysiphe betae. The fungus is spread during the growing season by spores, which germinate easily on the surface of leaves. From one year to the next, the fungus resists due to the resistance fructification left on the plant debris.

Prevention and control. The sugar beet powdery mildew usually appears in autumn on older leaves with low vitality and on beet leaves for seed. During the growing season, after the appearance of the disease, treatments with specific fungicides will be carried out.
