String-of-pearls (Curio rowleyanus syn. Senecio rowleyanus) is a succulent plant, which is part of the Asteraceae family, originally from Africa. String-of-pearls is a unique plant in its appearance. The leaves are small, round, like pearls. They grow on long and thin stems. It is a climbing plant, being an ideal choice for hanging baskets. It has a fast growth, the branches reaching up to 1 meter in length.

The flowers appear in the spring, they are white and have a pleasant smell. However, it rarely blooms in indoor conditions.

Environmental conditions

Light. It grows well in direct or indirect light conditions. It prefers direct light in the early part of the day and indirect (diffuse) light in the afternoon. 

Temperature. In the spring-autumn period, it prefers temperatures of 21-22 ℃. During the cold season, it can be kept at temperatures of 10-15 ℃. 

Humidity. String-of-pearls prefers to be kept in conditions of low atmospheric humidity.

Substrate. It is recommended to use a special substrate for succulent plants. Since they are prone to root rot, it is important that the substrate provides a good water drainage.

Watering. Watering must be done moderately, so that the substrate can be slightly damp during the warm season. During winter, the frequency of watering will be reduced. Excessive moisture and poor water drainage can lead to root rot and to the death of the plant.

Fertilizing. During the vegetative growth period, it is recommended to administer a balanced fertilizer, once every two weeks. You can use a fertilizer specially formulated for succulent plants.

Pruning. It is recommended to remove stems and dry leaves. In addition, if the stems are too long, they can be shortened. Pruning helps to keep the shape and increase the vigor of the plant.

Propagation. String-of-pearls can be propagated by stem cuttings or seeds. Propagation by stem cuttings is the most common method and can be done in spring, summer or early autumn (in areas with a warmer climate). The cuttings will form roots in approximately 3-4 weeks after planting.

Transplanting. The optimal time for transplanting is early spring. The plant can be repotted periodically, every 1-2 years, when the pot becomes too large.

Diseases and pests

The plant can be attacked by pests such as aphids, wooly apple aphids, European fruit lecanium, mites. Persistent moisture in the substrate can lead to root rot and the appearance and development of soil diseases.

Additionally:
  • All parts of the plant are toxic to humans and animals;
  • String-of-pearls has a short lifespan (approximately 3-5 years). When the plant begins to lose its vitality, it can be propagated by stem cuttings to grow new plants.
