Published on: February 1, 2022 Modified on: 27 April 2024

Sonchus asper (Spiny sowthistle) is an annual weed with a strong taproot. It prefers fresh soils that are not poor in limestone, fertile loamy, and loamy-sandy soils.

The stem is thick, hollow on the inside, glabrous, often branched at the base, with a height of up to 80 cm.

The cotyledons have a spatulate or oval-elongated shape, reddish, with a short petiole.

The true leaves are thick with spiky edges. The cotyledonous and true leaves seem to be covered with a waxy coating. It is a plant usually found in cereals or hayfields.

The first true leaf is lacy (serrated), the second is with hairs on the spikes, the leaves are blue-green, glossy, and the upper leaves are sessile, wrapping the base of the stem, in a spiral, all being spiked and hairy.

Spiny sowthistle flowers are made up of convex capitula, dull yellow (pale), clustered in dense inflorescences with few flowers; the capitula and peduncles do not have glandular hairs.

The flowering period takes place from summer to autumn, the plant producing between 1000-6000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
