Slugs (Deroceras agreste) – pest management

One of the most common species of slugs is Deroceras agreste, which is widespread in all areas where seedlings are grown in gardens, as well as in field crops. The pest can be found mainly in regions with high humidity. It is frequently found in the lowland and mountainous regions.

Description. The slug has an elongated body (40-60 mm), white-yellow to reddish-brown, and has a reticular pattern on the back. The body is covered with a less obvious, milky mucus. It has two pairs of tentacles (“horns”), slightly darker in color. The pneumostome, the breathing pore, is highlighted through the presence of a narrow ring, lighter in color. The slug can be found in forests, orchards, vegetable gardens, vegetable seedbeds, tobacco crops, etc. It prefers wet places.

Life cycle. It is a pest that overwinters in the egg stage, in the surface layer of the soil, sheltered under stones, plant debris, lichens, and moss and it rarely overwinters as an adult. In May, small snails hatch from the eggs, which initially feed on the underground parts of the plants, sometimes emerging from the soil, feeding on their aerial parts. Hatched slugs or adults, usually leave the overwintering place in May, at 8-10º C. Hatched slugs, usually mature in 2-3 months. They produce 2-3 generations per year. It is a hermaphroditic species, with a nocturnal diet. It lays the eggs in the ground, in groups of 20-30 eggs (approximative 600 eggs in total), from which at the end of development, resulting in adult mollusks.

Crop damage. Slugs feed on various species of cultivated and spontaneous plants, including tobacco, attacking the leaves and underground parts. The leaves have perforations of different shapes and sizes, and deep cavities are dug in the roots. The attacked parts are covered with a whitish mucus, and the attacked leaves dry out and the roots rot.
