Siskiyou lewisia, planting guide and care work
Siskiyou lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon) is a succulent plant, which is part of the Montiaceae family, native to southern Oregon and northern California. Siskiyou lewisia stands out for its fleshy, dark green leaves, which form a rosette at the base of the plant and for its decorative flowers, which appear at the top of the tall stems. The flowers can be pale pink, orange, or yellow, with stripes of different colors. The plant blooms at the end of spring – beginning of summer.
Siskiyou lewisia is preferably used for decorating gardens, curbs and rockeries, but it is also found as an indoor plant, in flowerpots or in flower boxes.
Siskiyou lewisia – species and varieties
- L. cotyledon ‘Rainbow’: it grows in the form of a compact bush, approximately 20 cm high. The leaves are fleshy, serrated, and the flowers are single or semi-double, clustered in bunches, in shades of pink, purple, orange and yellow;
- L. cotyledon ‘Sunset Strain’: a cultivar similar to L. Rainbow;
- L. cotyledon ‘Ruby Red’: it has dark pink flowers;
- L. cotyledon ‘Mountain Dreams’: with dense flowers, of different colors: pink, orange and overlapping, symmetrical leaves;
- Lewisia tweedyi;
- Lewisia columbiana;
- Lewisia rediviva.
Environmental conditions
Light. In colder climates it prefers full sun, and in warmer climates it can tolerate partial shade better. If it is grown indoors, it can be placed in bright places, but protected from the strong rays of the sun, especially during the summer.
Temperature. To grow and bloom, it needs optimal temperatures between 18 – 23 ℃. Temperatures below 4 ℃ can irreversibly damage the plant.
Soil. It needs a soil that ensures a very good water drainage. For growing in flowerpots, one can opt for a special substrate for cacti and succulent plants.

Siskiyou lewisia – care
Watering. Being a succulent plant, it is resistant to drought, but during the warm season (especially during flowering) it needs additional watering. Excessive moisture and poor water drainage can cause root rot and the plant’s death.
When watering, it is recommended that the leaves remain dry, as they can rot.
Fertilizing. It has average fertilizing requirements. During the vegetative growth and flowering period, fertilizers specially formulated for succulent plants can be applied.

Propagation. The most common propagation method is by removing the seedlings that appear at the base of the plant. This method can be carried out at the beginning of summer.
The freshly removed seedlings will not be planted immediately, but will be left to dry for a few days. After that, they will be planted in a substrate specially designed for this purpose.
