Saintpaulia, pest and disease control

saintpaulia-pests-diseases

Saintpaulia plants do not have the same environmental conditions as in their area of origin, so they can be easily susceptible to diseases and pests attacks. The plants must be tended to according to their requirements, monitored to detect in time the problems that may occur, and if you notice the presence of pests/diseases, it is recommended to isolate the plant in question, so as not to affect the others.

Pests

The most common pests that can occur in Parma violets (Saintpaulia) are aphids, mites, and whiteflies.

Specific insecticides can be applied against aphids:

Diseases

Excessive humidity can cause downy mildew and gray mold. Downy mildew is manifested through the softening, wilting, and drying of the affected plants. Gray mold is manifested through the appearance of green-gray spots, covered with a white-gray fuzz.

Specific fungicide treatments can be applied against downy mildew.

Physiological disorders

Root rot occurs due to excessive watering or a substrate that is too compact, which does not allow easy drainage of water. Thus, it is advisable to never leave water in the plate under the pot for more than 10 minutes and to choose a light substrate, made of Ericaceae soil and leaf manure.
At the same time, improper watering and a dry atmosphere can lead to yellowing leaves.

Leaf discoloration can be caused by direct sunlight, so the Parma violets (Saintpaulia) should be placed near a window with a fine curtain to filter the light.

Deformed leaves represent the symptoms of a virus, for which there is no known treatment.

Leaf spotting (the appearance of white-yellow spots on the leaves) is caused by watering the plant with cold water. It is recommended to use water at room temperature or warmer.

Flowers dropping occurs as a result of sudden temperature fluctuations or if the temperature in the room is too low. Thus, you must keep in mind that the optimal growth temperature of Parma violets is 20-22º C.

Tips for proper care of Parma violets (Saintpaulia):

due to its pubescent foliage, it is not recommended to spray the leaves with water, except in the case of phytosanitary treatments.
watering should be done only by pouring water directly into the pot, by immersing the pot, or by pouring water into the tray (for 10 minutes).
for watering, use softened water.
temperatures that are too low (below 12° C) cause the plant to dry out.
