Perennial sowthistle – information and weed control

Sonchus arvensis (Perennial sowthistle) is a polycarpic perennial weed with root suckers, part of the Asteraceae family, often found in crops, early cultures of greens and bushes, with propagation through seeds and radicular buds, which makes it difficult to control.

The stem is straight, often simple, only at the topside branched, with a height of up to 150 cm.

The cotyledons are round or round oval, with a full edge, laid to the ground, with short stems.

The true leaves are round, oval, large, with a finely serrated edge. The next leaves are lanceolate and after that leaves with a winged petiole, spiny, cordiform, sessile.

Perennial sowthistle flower is golden yellow, the involucre and the stem are generally covered with glandular hairs.

The flowering period is from summer to autumn, with the plant producing between 6000-20 000 seeds.
