pea downy mildew-identify-and-control

Pea downy mildew, Peronospora pisi is frequently found in pea crops, in the wet periods of the year, especially on young plants, with crop losses of 10-20%.

Symptoms. The pea downy mildew is present on all plant organs, leaves, stipules, stems, and pods. The characteristic symptoms are those on the leaves and stipules. On them appear yellow spots (without precise outline), in front of which on the lower face a gray-purple fuzz is formed. The affected areas are necrotic and dry.

The pathogen is Peronospora pisi. It spreads during the growing season, through the spores that appear on the gray-violet mycelium. Secondary infections can occur several times a year, depending on the temperature and rainfall that favors the infection.

Prevention and control. As preventive measures, a four-year crop rotation, the use of the healthy seed, the burying of infected plant debris, and the sowing of resistant varieties are recommended. Also, it is recommended to treat the seeds with specific fungicides.

During the growing season, it is recommended to carry out treatments with specific fungicides.
