Palm, pest and disease control

palm-pests-diseases

Palm trees do not have the same environmental conditions as in their area of origin, so they can be easily susceptible to diseases and pests attacks. The plants must be cared for according to their requirements, monitored to detect in time the problems that may occur, and if you notice the presence of pests/diseases, it is recommended to isolate the plant in question, so as not to affect the others.

Pests

The most common pests that can infest palm trees are mites, scale insects, and wooly apple aphids.

Problems related to inadequate care

Being native to the tropics, in other countries, with different climates, palm trees are very rarely affected by fungal diseases. Most often, the symptoms are caused by improper care.

Leaves with brown spots – are caused by excessive watering or by low room temperatures. Thus, it is recommended to add water moderately, only when the soil is dry on the surface, and to keep the plants at an optimal temperature of 20-25° C. Caution! Keeping the palm trees at a temperature lower than 10° C can irreversibly affect them.

Leaf yellowing – it can be caused by poor watering or lack of nutrients in the substrate. To prevent this problem, it is recommended to water the plants moderately and to use special fertilizer for palm trees, especially in March-October. It is advisable to follow the recommended dose of fertilizer in order to avoid the accumulation of salts in the substrate and leaf burn.

Tip! In some palms (eg Cycas revoluta ) yellowing of the leaves at the base of the trunk is a normal process, and these should be removed.

Leaf tips drying – it is caused by low atmospheric humidity, so it is essential to regularly spray the leaves with non-calcareous water.

Leaves drying and scorching – it can be caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. It is ideal to place the palm trees next to a window with eastern or southern exposure, behind a fine curtain that filters direct sunlight.

Tips for proper palm care:

  • palm trees should be placed in a bright, well-ventilated place, away from strong sunlight and cold drafts.
  • they should be watered moderately so that the soil dries slightly before you water them again. You should especially avoid excessive watering, which can affect the roots. At the same time, it is important that the substrate is light and that the water drains well.
  • palm trees can be kept outdoors during the summer, but they must be brought indoors during the cold season, as they are sensitive to low temperatures.
  • to ensure the necessary atmospheric humidity, it is recommended to spray the leaves periodically.
