Myosotis (Myosotis spp.), popularly called forget-me-not, is an annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plant, native to North America and Eurasia. It is a short plant, growing up to 25 cm high, with branched stems, covered with fine bristles. The leaves are lanceolate, green, slightly pubescent. The flowers are small and decorative, made up of 5 blue, white or pink petals, clustered in a top-type inflorescence. Myosotis can be grown in gardens (to cover the ground) or in flowerpots and planters.

Myosotis – varieties and cultivars

The genus Myosotis includes numerous species, of which the most common is Myosotis sylvatica, having several cultivars:

  • ‘Blue Basket’: it is taller than others and has blue flowers;
  • ‘Music’: it has larger, blue flowers;
  • ‘Pompadour’: it has a compact growth and pink flowers;
  • ‘Snowball’: it has white flowers;
  • ‘Victoria Rose’: it has pink flowers;
  • ‘Ultramarine’: it has a smaller size and has dark blue flowers.

Environmental conditions

Light. It can be cultivated in partially shaded or bright places (especially in the first part of the day).

Temperature. The plants are not resistant to very low or very high temperatures. However, during the winter, if there is no frost, the plants can survive the following year.

Soil. Myosotis grows and develops on fertile soils that allow a good water drainage. The pH value of the soil can be neutral or weakly alkaline.

Myosotis – Care

Watering. The plants are watered regularly, so that the soil is kept permanently damp.

Fertilizing. Myosotis reacts favorably to the application of fertilizers. You can use fertilizers for ornamental plants, liquid or in the form of granules.

Propagation. It is easily propagated by seeds, having at the same time a high capacity for reseeding. The seeds can be sown directly in the garden, at the end of summer – the beginning of autumn, flowering taking place the following year.

At the same time, they can be sown indoors with approx. 8-10 weeks before the last spring frost. Before moving them outside, a slight acclimatization is necessary.

Additionally:
  • To prevent the plants from reseeding and spreading, the flowers can be cut after flowering, before the formation of seeds;
  • If grown in flowerpots, it is important that they have drainage holes.
