Marvel-of-peru, planting guide and care work
Marvel-of-peru (Mirabilis jalapa) is a herbaceous, perennial plant with tuberous roots and branched stems. Marvel-of-peru is part of the Nyctaginaceae family and it is native to South America (Peru). The plant is also found under the name “four o’clock flower”. The name is given because of the way it blooms. The flowers open in the afternoon, usually around 16:00. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, fragrant and appear clustered at the top of the stems. The flowers can have a single shade, for example: pink, white, red, yellow, purple or they can be two-colored. The plant blooms from summer to autumn. The leaves are large, alternately arranged, oval, pointed at the tip, dark green.
Marvel-of-peru is a decorative plant thanks to its flowers, often found in gardens or in flowerpots and flower boxes.
Marvel-of-peru – varieties and cultivars
- M. jalapa ‘Alba’: with white flowers and a light citrus scent;
- M. jalapa ‘Jingles’: with small, multicolored flowers;
- M. jalapa ‘Kaleidoscope’: a variety with multi-colored flowers: white, pink, yellow on which striations can be seen.
Environmental conditions
Light. The Marvel-of-peru prefers sunny places, where it can benefit from sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. It can also tolerate partial shade, but in these conditions it is likely to no longer bloom profusely.
Temperature. It prefers higher temperatures. In areas with a colder climate, they are grown as annual plants, which die with the drop in temperatures and the appearance of frost. However, after flowering, in autumn, the tuberous roots can be removed from the soil and stored in a cool and dark place. They will be planted in the spring, once the temperatures start to rise. In areas with a warmer climate, the tuberous roots can remain in the soil during the winter.
Soil. It does not have high demands in terms of soil. It grows well on a fertile, clayey, well-drained soil. The soil can have a neutral-slightly acidic pH.
Marvel-of-peru – care
Watering. It will be done regularly, letting the soil dry slightly on the surface before watering again. Excessive watering and a permanently wet soil will lead to root rot. Plants grown in pots will be watered more often than those grown directly in the ground.
Fertilizing. In order to grow properly and to bloom, the regular fertilizing of the plants with balanced fertilizers is recommended. Special fertilizers for flowering plants can be used.
