Lawn-specific pests, information and control

Mammals and small insects can damage the lawn, depending on the intensity of their attack, but also on the vegetative phase during which they attack. Insects play a very important role in the ecosystem. Even if most do not cause damage, some of them can destroy turf surfaces. Thus, all these can be considered lawn-specific pests.

European mole cricket – Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa

The European mole cricket, through the underground tunnels it digs, affects the roots of the plants that form the lawn. They have a length of 3-5 cm, solid body and the forelimbs have the shape of “shovels”, which are very effective in their digging process. They are very active during the year, and in winter they enter a hibernation process. These pests feed on the roots of turf species, eventually leading to their death.

Wireworms or click beetles are polyphagous pests, which can be found in almost all regions of the globe. The following species are some of the most common: Agriotes lineatus, Agriotes ustulatus Schäll and Agriotes obscurus. The wireworms represent the larvae of the click beetles, they have an elongated body, covered by a strong chitinized skin, yellow-chestnut in color. They feed on the roots of grass species, which turn yellow and dry out.

Slugs

These pests are widespread in many countries. Slugs are polyphagous pests, that attack the lawn when they cannot feed on their favorite plant species. The attack can be observed by the presence of white mucus on the surface of the lawn. As species, the most common are the grey field slug (Agriolimax agreste) and the grey garden slug (Doreceras reticulatam). These species are active at night in humid climates.

Tipula paludosa/oleracea (True craneflies)

These insects are considered lawn-specific pests and are similar to mosquitoes, but much larger. They are harmful to the lawn in the larval stage. They attack the root system and the stem. Following the attack, the plants wither and die. The larvae attack in autumn after hatching, but also in spring, when the larvae that survived the winter attack the turf.

Moles (Talpa europea)

The appearance of relatively large mounds are the signs of the presence of moles in the lawn. They do not usually create a single mound, and in a short period of time others will also appear. The mole, in addition to the damage it brings to a garden or lawn, it has some positive effects by controlling a series of harmful insects that are found in the soil.
