Jimsonweed – information and weed control

Datura stramonium (Jimsonweed) is an annual, wild plant that can be found in lowland areas. It is a very toxic medicinal plant, with white flowers and black seeds enclosed in a capsule with soft spikes in the shape of a funnel. All parts of the plant are toxic. It can often be found in pastures, fields, waste areas, crops, along roadsides.

The stem is tall and branched, it can grow up to 5 m in height. It is fistulous, green or purple.  

The true leaves are large, alternately arranged, oval, with serrated edges, colored in dark green.

Jimsonweed flower is large, white, 6-10 cm long, with a tubular calyx and the shape of a funnel.

The fruit is a large, ovoid capsule, initially green, with numerous hairs, then it turns brown, with many small, dark brown seeds inside when fully mature.

The germination season is in late spring or summer.

The flowering period is from June to August.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the crop.
