The fruit fly – Drosophila melanogaster, is a small insect that belongs to the order Diptera of the family Drosophilidae. They generally appear at the end of the warm season and can easily enter homes in search of food and shelter. They are attracted to cooked foods, foods in the process of putrefaction, and fermented fruits (for example apples, pears, bananas, tomatoes, onions, etc.). Fruit flies, also known as vinegar flies can multiply and develop in drains, bins, trash cans, mops.

Vinegar flies are annoying and harmful insects for humans, as they can transfer bacteria or other pathogens to food or to surfaces with which food comes in contact.

Fruit flies – Types of treatments

Against fruit flies, you can apply specific spray insecticides or use ready-to-use insecticides. Traps can also be used for monitoring and capturing flies.

Before applying treatments, it is important to perform a rigorous cleaning of the space. Altered/infested food must be discarded, and surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned so that no scraps remain. Also, uninfested food must be removed from the room, and the surfaces used for food preparation must be covered.

For the applied treatments to have the most effective results, it is very important to identify and treat the source of infestation and areas with a high risk of vinegar flies.

Insecticide treatments

After identifying the source and taking specific measures, insecticide treatments can be performed by spraying. The solution will be applied in all areas where the activity of vinegar flies is observed (kitchen, garbage storage, etc.). Treatments can be applied with any type of sprayer (manual or motorized). Insecticides should not be applied to food, surfaces, or utensils that may come into contact with food.

Recommended insecticides for fruit fly control:

They are biocidal products used for fruit fly treatments, most of which act on the insect’s nervous system. Against fruit flies concentrated contact insecticides are recommended, which dissolve in water, according to the recommended doses. The solution is applied using specific equipment, especially in places where the activity of insects is more intense.

Recommended sprayers for the application of insecticides:

Sprayers are low-pressure applicator devices that are used for the application of pesticides using precise dosages. Their capacity varies depending on the type of device, the design, the application method (manual / motorized sprayers), and the size of the treated space. Special attention must be paid to the device settings, as well as to its maintenance.

Ready-to-use insecticide treatments

They can be found in the form of powder, granules, liquid, and spray. Ready-to-use insecticides are meant to be applied to dry surfaces. Because they act by contact or ingestion, pests must cross the treated space. It is advised to carefully read and follow the recommendations on the label of the product used.

Recommended ready-to-use insecticides:

Ready-to-use insecticides are pre-dosed products and can come in several forms (spray, powder, granules, etc.). The application is made according to the treated space, taking into account the information on the product label. For optimal results, they are usually applied as close as possible to the source of infestation.

Attractant traps

Attractant traps can also be used to control vinegar flies, to attract the insects present in the area near the trap, and to capture them. With the help of the traps, the activity of vinegar flies can be controlled in areas such as the kitchen, trash cans, near windows, etc. It is recommended to remove food sources that can attract vinegar flies (ripe fruits, sweet foods, spilled liquids) from the area where the traps will be placed. Place them as close as possible to the areas where the vinegar flies are active (areas where the fruits are stored, kitchen counter, near garbage containers, etc.).

Depending on the product, the traps can be used only indoors or even outdoors.

Recommended attractant traps for fruit flies:

This type of trap contains an attractant that has the role of enticing the vinegar flies to approach the trap and get caught inside, controlling their activity on a certain surface. It also prevents them from reaching into areas where they are not wanted. They are used indoors – kitchen, closet, storage spaces for fruits and vegetables, but also outdoors, depending on the product.

UV light traps

The traps work by attracting vinegar flies with the help of UV lights and trapping them. Use traps with adhesive plates against vinegar flies. UV light will attract pests, and they will remain trapped in the adhesive. It has the advantage that insects cannot exit the device and do not make noise when they are caught. Therefore, they are most recommended for indoor use in the food industry. It is important to replace the board periodically, because, over time, the properties of the adhesive are reduced (when covered by insects or dust).

The role of UV light traps is to control the activity of vinegar flies and is mainly used indoors. The traps are placed as close as possible to the food sources or as close as possible to the area frequented by them. In addition, the light from the trap must be much stronger than other light sources.

Recommended UV-Light traps for fruit flies:

They are electrical devices used to catch flying insects, provided with an adhesive surface. The insects attracted by the light emitted by the LED will remain trapped onto the adhesive. They are usually used in addition to chemical treatments to control insect populations.

Vinegar flies are small insects that multiply very quickly. That’s why it is imperative to place traps and spray treatments from the first signs of infestation – as fast as possible. At the same time, to prevent their appearance, it is recommended to eliminate spoiled food, to constantly take out the garbage, as to not to create optimal conditions for insect development, and to keep the environment as clean as possible.
