How to get rid of Foxes

get-rid-of-foxes

Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) – are omnivorous mammals of the family Canidae and are spread on all continents except Antarctica. Foxes are found mainly in the wild, in areas rich in vegetation (forests, meadows), but can also be found in alpine and arid areas. They build narrow burrows, with numerous entrances and exits, where they store their food and raise their young. However, when changes occur in their habitat, foxes may appear in urban or rural areas seeking shelter and food.

Usually, foxes feed on rodents, fish, frogs, birds, insects, fruits, vegetables, seeds, poultry eggs, etc. Specimens that live near urban and suburban areas are attracted to food waste found in trash cans/bins.

While some species are considered endangered, the red fox is the most widespread globally and is often found in human-populated areas. It can easily adapt and build burrows near houses or in gardens.

In addition to the damage they cause to the household, foxes can spread a number of diseases (such as rabies) and parasites (such as fleas, ticks). In addition, if they feel threatened, they can become quite aggressive.

Signs of infestation

The presence of foxes can be signaled by the damage caused in the garden, in bird/animal shelters (disappearance of birds, eggs, or small animals). Also, if the environment is favorable, they can build burrows under wooden buildings, warehouses, or near houses.

Other signs of the presence of foxes: specific noises, tracks, signs of digging, pungent smell of ammonia after they mark their territory, the presence of excrements in visible places, damaged rubbish bins/dumpsters, etc.

Methods to keep foxes at bay

To prevent the appearance of foxes, it is recommended to create and maintain an unwelcoming environment. Thus, it is recommended to store garbage in airtight containers, remove all food sources that may attract foxes (food scraps, feed), remove piles of wood, and block entrances to spaces under the house, terrace, sheds, or other structures.

In addition, it is important to reinforce protective fences and shelters for animals and birds.

If the presence of foxes has been detected, sound devices – animal cannons can be used to drive them away or special traps can be used to capture them and then release them safely back into the wild.

Foxes cannons

They are devices that emit loud (explosive) noises, used for the safe removal of foxes from farms, crops, and other open spaces. Usually, the cannon is powered by a gas cylinder and operated by a piezoelectric motor, independent of any energy source. Depending on the type of device, the range and frequency of detonations can be programmed or preset.

Recommended fox cannons:

Cannons are devices that work by intimidating and scaring away foxes from a certain area. Because the sounds they produce are louder, they are intended for open spaces. They run on a gas engine.

Traps for catching foxes

Traps can be used both to monitor the presence of foxes and to capture them safely. It is recommended to place traps in areas frequented by foxes, along fences, or close to the entrance of their burrows (if they are present). Because foxes are nocturnal animals, it is recommended to place traps towards the end of the day and check them every morning.

To lure the fox inside the trap, it is advisable to use bait (raw meat, fish, or strong-smelling food) and remove alternative food sources around the trap.

After capture, mechanical traps can be reused. However, before reusing, it is recommended that they be washed and disinfected. In addition, it is important to use protective gloves when placing the trap, so that animals do not detect the smell of hands, as well as when handling the trap after capturing the animal, to avoid possible contamination.

Cages for fox trapping:

They are mechanical devices used for the safe capture and removal of foxes from a certain area. They are made from metal and are highly durable. After capturing the animal, the traps can be disinfected and reused.

Recommended protective gloves:

The role of gloves is to protect the person handling the traps from the risk of contamination. They are also used when placing traps so that the animals do not detect the smell of the hands.

In order to prevent the appearance of foxes in a certain area, it is recommended to create and maintain an unfavorable environment. Thus, it is indicated to remove all food sources and the reinforcement of protective fences and shelters for birds and animals. At the first signs of foxes, animal cannons and traps can be used to safely remove them.
