How to get rid of Earwigs

earwigs insecticide treatments

Earwigs: are small insects that are part of the order Dermaptera. They are widely spread in the Americas, Eurasia, Australia and New Zealand, with higher diversity in tropical and subtropical areas. About 2,000 species are currently known, divided into 12 families.

Earwigs usually live in large communities. Because of this, they can be considered pests, because in large numbers they can cause quite a lot of damage to the attacked crops.

Most earwigs are nocturnal insects. Thus, during the day they are hidden in the cracks of trees, and stumps, but also in other plant debris. They can also find food in these places because they consume plant waste or animal matter. They usually feed at night, causing damage to crops. However, due to their omnivorous diet, earwigs can be considered beneficial insects in the garden, because they can eat the larvae of beetles, worms or aphids, thus protecting the plants attacked by these pests.

Earwigs consume both the leaves and the fruit of the plants, causing unsightly damage, respectively, holes with a diameter between 3-11 mm. In addition to the damages caused to the plants, they can enter people’s homes, creating discomfort. Most of the time, they can be noticed on the exterior walls, looking for a way to get inside.

Earwigs – Signs of an infestation

If they manage to enter the house, earwigs can be found most often in places with high humidity, such as bathrooms or basements. However, it is important to note that earwigs do not affect the property, are not attracted to human food and do not reproduce indoors.

Types of treatments

Indoors, in order to control them, it is recommended to carry out treatments with insecticides applied through spraying. They act through direct contact. More precisely, the pests must cross the surface on which the solution was applied, in order to have the desired effect.
