How to get rid of bedbugs with ecological treatments

bedbugs-ecological-treatments

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed on blood, representing the species Cimex lectularius. As the name suggests, they are found in the bed area. They prefer this space so as not to move too much in the search for food. Bed bugs are active, especially at night. These pests are attracted to the host’s body and feed on its blood. However, bed bugs attack not only humans but also warm-blooded animals such as dogs, cats, birds and rodents. In the event of a bed bugs infestation, specific measures and ecological treatments should be considered.

Types of ecological treatments against bed bugs

It is important to know that bed bugs can survive for a long time without feeding. In order to control the activity of bedbugs, treatments with ecological insecticides or heat treatments can be carried out, while traps can be used for monitoring the level of infestation.

Ecological treatments have the advantage that the treated areas can be accessed immediately. It also eliminates the danger of exposure to chemical residues and avoids the phenomenon of resistance to insecticides.

Thermal treatments against bed bugs

It is an ecological method, which has proven to be very effective against bed bugs. Adults, eggs and larvae cannot withstand temperatures above 60 ºC for more than 2 hours. Thus, through thermal treatments, the insects are destroyed in all stages of development. Special bags/chambers are used, in which the objects to be treated are placed. The device will heat to a temperature of up to 50-70 ºC, after which it will be kept constant for at least 60 minutes.

Ecological insecticide treatments

Controlling bedbugs is more difficult compared to other pests. In this case, it is recommended to apply several treatments, so that the results are the desired ones. Thus, treatments are carried out with ecological insecticides, applied in places where bedbugs could hide (bed furniture, bedside tables, baseboards, etc.). The treatments can be applied with manual or motorized sprayers, depending on the size of the respective space. The solution is recommended to be applied within 24 hours because after this period it loses its properties.

Depending on the degree of the infestation, for total control, it is recommended to repeat the treatment every 21 days, but not more than 28 days after the first treatment, depending on the specifications on the label of the product used. If the temperature exceeds 30 ºC, the treatment will be repeated after 14 days from the initial treatment.

Also, after carrying out the treatments, it is recommended that the treated area be vacuumed very well, in order to remove the dead insects and their eggs. After vacuuming, the vacuum cleaner’s bag will be thoroughly cleaned or thrown away. Also, all fabrics and materials that tolerate this process, will be washed at a temperature above 60 °C.

Adhesive traps

Traps are used only for monitoring purposes, before and after chemical treatments. Before carrying out the treatment, they are used to confirm the presence of bedbugs in a certain space and to observe the degree of infestation. After the treatment, they are mounted to monitor the treated space and check the results of the treatments performed.

In hotels, motels and other accommodation units, traps are used to identify a possible infestation from the earliest stages. Traps do not control and do not prevent an infestation with bed bugs.

Bed Bug Monitor

The Bed Bug Monitor is a device used exclusively for monitoring bed bugs and does not control or prevent their activity. Traps simulate the activity of the human body, emitting heat and carbon dioxide, so bedbugs are attracted to it and come out of their hiding places. As a result, they are captured on the adhesive board. For optimum efficiency, it is recommended that it be mounted in uninhabited rooms, as close as possible to the infested place. Depending on the size of the room, several devices can be placed, if necessary.

In conclusion, bed bugs are more difficult to control. Therefore, for effective results, it is recommended to carry out regular treatments from the first signs of infestation. Thus, as an ecological treatment against them, a series of measures can be taken such as: the use of traps for monitoring their activity, the application of ecological insecticides, thermal treatments, etc. All this is in addition to the measures that should be taken to prevent an infestation.
