How to apply herbicides

What are herbicides?

Herbicides are chemical substances that have a selective or total phytotoxic effect on unwanted plant species in a crop, such as weeds. Weed removal is recommended because the weeds compete with crops for light, water, soil nutrients, but also space, leading to reduced productivity and impaired crop quality. In addition to the application of technological weed control works (soil work, mulching, soil disinfection, etc.), the herbicide is an alternative method of eliminating them.

The action of herbicides is given by the active substance, but in their composition, herbicides include other auxiliary substances. For example solvents, stabilizers, adjuvants, etc., with different roles in maintaining and increasing the effectiveness of the product. Following application, the herbicide acts on weeds by inhibiting vital processes, leading to their wilting.

Herbicides application

Weed control can be done by two methods: on the ground (pre-emergent herbicides) or foliar (post-emergent herbicides). Depending on the weed control method, the right herbicides will be chosen. Certain aspects will be taken into account, such as the time of application, more precisely whether the herbicide is pre-emergent or post-emergent, the mode of action (with contact herbicides, systemic or residual), and their spectrum of action (selective or total).

A herbicide can be:

  • pre-emergent – is applied before the emergence of weeds and crop plants;
  • post-emergent – is applied after the emergence of weeds, during the growing season;
  • contact herbicide – is applied on the above ground parts of the plant, acting only in the area and around the area where the herbicide was applied; they have the highest efficiency on the annual weeds, as they do not have energy reserves to help the plant recover;
  • systemic – is applied on the above grounds of the plant, from where it is absorbed by the leaves and then translocated throughout the plant;
  • residual – is applied to the soil and acts on the seeds of weeds in the process of emergence or penetrates into the roots, acting on them.
  • selective – eliminates only certain categories of weeds: monocotyledonous or dicotyledonous (broad-leaved), annual or perennial, not affecting crops for which the herbicide is approved;
  • non-selective: removes weeds, but also any other existing plant on the surface on which it was applied.

Ground herbicides for weed control

It is made in pre-emergence, with residual herbicides. The active substance is taken up by the roots of the sprouting weeds, stopping their development.

When applying herbicides, the soil must be well crushed, so that the herbicide can be evenly distributed and well supplied with water. In dry conditions, the products lose their effectiveness.

Recommended products

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product

Foliar herbicides for weed control

It is made in post-emergence, with contact or systemic herbicides, selective or total. They penetrate the plant, especially through the leaf.

Recommended products

Read carefully and follow the instructions on the label of each product

Contact herbicides are translocated into the plant to a small extent, acting mainly in the area or around the area where they were applied. Instead, systemic herbicides are picked up by the leaf and then translocated, mainly through the vascular system, throughout the plant. The action time of contact herbicides is shorter than that of systemic herbicides, but the effectiveness of the latter is higher because systemic herbicides act on the whole plant.

In order for the herbicide to have the expected effect, it is advisable to respect the temperature ranges recommended for application, as well as the optimal time of application, correlated with the vegetative growth of weeds and crop plants.

It is not recommended to apply herbicides in periods of strong winds or followed by rainfall, to prevent environmental pollution and ensure effective treatment.

It is NOT recommended to apply herbicides to crops other than those approved.

Safety measures

Herbicides are toxic substances, and their handling requires knowledge and compliance with safety rules:

  1. Plant protection products are purchased only from authorized places and in approved doses. The use of products from unsafe sources endangers the health of consumers, as well as the crops on which they are applied.
  2. It’s important to read and follow the instructions on the product label, as well as the storage measures after use. The label mentions important information about the active substance and the type of formulation, the approved cultures and the weeds controlled, the dose, the preharvest interval, etc.
  3. Wear appropriate protective equipment, both during the preparation of the solution and during its application. The label of each product indicates the type of equipment recommended, depending on the level of toxicity and the degree of exposure. Please note that the equipment must be certified for use in performing plant protection treatments. In the case of reusable equipment, it is cleaned after each use, separately from ordinary clothes. Disposable equipment is discarded after first use.
  4. Correct cleaning and calibration of the application equipment. Before spraying, it is advisable to check the equipment so that there is no loss of solution. After application, the equipment will be cleaned. Calibration ensures the application of the appropriate dose on the surface unit and it is recommended to perform it at the beginning of each season.
