Hoary cress – information and weed control

Cardaria draba (Hoary cress) is a perennial weed, with a very branched taproot at the topside. Prefers skeletal, loamy soils, rich in calcium, in areas with moderate temperatures.

The stem is vertical, branched at the topside, slightly edged, with gray hairs and up to 50 cm high.

The cotyledons are oval, with a full edge, rounded at the tip.

The true leaves are elongated, elliptical to lanceolate, not glossy, and the foliar limb ends abruptly in the petiole. The first 3-4 leaves are entire and glabrous, the next ones are sinuous-toothed, with short hairs. Before flowering, they turn yellow.

Hoary cress flowers are small, white, spread (emit) a pleasant scent, numerous, with the petals twice as long as the green-yellow sepals.

The flowering period is from late spring to midsummer, and the plant produces between 1200-5000 seeds.

It is recommended to use approved herbicides to control it, depending on the concerned crop.
